Kaplan hospital nurses save man who tries to commit suicide at the entrance to Rehovot's Herzl Street

A nurse at Kaplan Medical Center in Rehovot used her sweater as a tourniquet to stop the profuse bleeding of a man whose foot was amputated by a railroad train when he ran towards the tracks in a suicide attempt.

A few days ago, Tami Shlomo, a pediatric nurse who was driving to Sheba Medical Center with two other nurses, was waiting for a train to pass at the exit from Rehovot. They saw a man rushing towards the train and get run over by one of the railway cars. The nurses ran out of the car to help the man, who was bleeding profusely but lay there quietly.

"It was incredible to see a man with an amputated food who didn't say anything or scream," said Shlomo. He even answered our questions about how he felt. We did all we could to keep him awake so he wouldn't lose consciousness before the ambulance arrived."

The pediatric nurse said the event was very traumatic for her, even though she was a medic in the IDF and knew what to do. After seeing the man's condition, she shouted for an elastic band, but no one had any, so he used her sweater to try to stop the bleeding.

The Magen David Adom ambulance evacuated the man to Kaplan for continued treatment, and he was admitted in stable condition. "I am proud of my hospital," said Shlomo, "and I knew he would get the best care to save his life. I called the department where he was hospitalize to check on his condition. When I heard that he was okay and that his relatives [had seen] him, I calmed down."

The three nurses will receive special recognition for their efforts from the hospital management for working quickly and properly to save a man's life.

Remembering Fallen Soldiers From Rehovot

Do you remember fallen soldiers from Rehovot?

Over the years over 400 chayalim have given their lives to defend Israel Independence. There is a memorial called Yad La'Banim in the center of the city. Inside the memorial a flame illuminates a wall listing the fallen soldiers. Outside is a park and a sculpture memorial.

This is where Official Memorial Service on April 23 took place this year.

There is also a website that displays the names of the fallen soldiers, Rehovot residents.

*) Beit Yad La'Banim is part of the Merkaz HaTarbut and also houses an art gallery and theatre for plays and concerts.

Remembering SFC Keren Tendler of Rehovot, 2nd Lebanon War Fallen Hero

Sergeant First Class Keren Tendler, would-be-27, of Rehovot, was one of five soldiers killed a year ago, 12 August 2006, when the helicopter on which they were serving, was shot down by Hizbullah terrorists over southern Lebanon.

Keren Tendler would often be seen in her neighborhood returning home wearing her IDF uniform. A few days ago, she was once again called to serve as a flight technician with her helicopter unit in the air force.

"She was smiling broadly – so happy," said a neighbor. "She said they were going to hold a special party for her in the army. She didn’t say more than that, but she was always very happy to serve, and was even proud of her reserve duty."

Shosh Levi, a teacher at the local ORT high school and a family friend, remembers Keren as "a very friendly and special child, who exhibited outstanding technical skills even as a small child." She was among the very few girls who studied mechanics in high school.

"She was a very pleasant girl, blonde with piercing eyes," continued Levi. "She had a special sense with her hands, and was one of the outstanding students in her track. She was just like her name – a ray of light who was full of life and happiness. She would always bring candies for her classmates."

Sergeant First Class Keren Tendler was buried in the military cemetery in Rehovot. She is survived by her parents Viryona and Dan, and a younger brother.

Outdoor Gym Garden of Sports Dedicated in Memory of Fallen Soldier-Woman, Rehovot Resident

Hero Keren Tendler's mother, Rivana, said the [sports] garden... was the best possible memorial for her daughter.

More than 100 people attended a ceremony in Rehovot on Tuesday to dedicate a [Greenfields Outdoor gym facility] garden in the memory of ORT graduate Sgt.-Maj. (res.) Keren Tendler, the first woman to be killed in action since the Yom Kippur War.

Tendler, the only female flight mechanic in the IAF, was killed along with four others while performing reserve service when their helicopter was shot down by Hizbullah near Yater, Lebanon, on August 12, 2006.

She was survived by her parents and a younger brother.

Joining Tendler's family at the ceremony were her comrades, senior Israel Air Force officers, Rehovot Mayor Shuki Forer, Shifra Cohen, director of the Yad Lebanim parents' organization for fallen soldiers, and representatives of World ORT, the world's largest Jewish educational and vocational training nongovernmental organization.

The ceremony featured Israeli pop song "Keren Ohr" (Ray of Light), whose lyrics are engraved on a plaque alongside a summary of Tendler's life at the garden in her native Rehovot. The one-acre garden is situated next to the military cemetery where Tendler is buried. The paths through the garden form the Hebrew letters "kuf" and "tet" - her initials.

Tendler's mother, Rivana, said the garden, which was sponsored by ORT together with the Rehovot Municipality and Nesher Israel Cement Enterprises, was the best possible memorial for her daughter.

"I don't have enough words to express my gratitude to ORT. The garden combines Keren's love of sport with her love for helicopters as it contains fitness equipment and a plaque telling her life story, featuring an engraving of the helicopter she flew," Rivana Tendler said.

Sonia Gomes de Mesquita, head of World ORT's International Liaison Department, said: "Even though ORT is 127 years old and Keren was just 26, she naturally embodied the original ideals and values from which the organization was born and which inspire us today. She proved that with the right education you can achieve incredible things. Her legacy will give others the chance to do the same. Many more young women, for years to come, will walk through doors that Keren opened."
