Rehovot teen suffers burns from YouTube-inspired smoke bomb

By Judy Siegel Itzkovich

A 16-year-old boy with lots of curiosity suffered second-degree burns on his face after trying to build a smoke bomb based on tips from a YouTube video. The teen, a high school physics student, was treated on Sunday night at Rehovot's Kaplan Medical Center.

The boy bought fertilizer at an agriculture supply store. He added sugar and stuffed the mixture into toilet-paper rolls. When he attempted to light one with a match from 20 centimeters away, there was a powerful explosion - after which he has no recollection of what happened.

The boy told doctors that some of the videos suggested adding baking soda to control the smoke. But he didn't because it would have reduced the effect.

Dr. Uri Shulman, a plastic surgeon at Kaplan, said the boy suffered second-degree burns on his cheek, lips and around his eyes, as well as on two fingers and the palm of a hand.

The boy's mother said she had suggested he refrain from conducting physics experiments until he enrolled at a university, but he couldn't resist.

"We are aware of the fact that it could have ended much worse," she said.

Kaplan hospital nurses save man who tries to commit suicide at the entrance to Rehovot's Herzl Street

A nurse at Kaplan Medical Center in Rehovot used her sweater as a tourniquet to stop the profuse bleeding of a man whose foot was amputated by a railroad train when he ran towards the tracks in a suicide attempt.

A few days ago, Tami Shlomo, a pediatric nurse who was driving to Sheba Medical Center with two other nurses, was waiting for a train to pass at the exit from Rehovot. They saw a man rushing towards the train and get run over by one of the railway cars. The nurses ran out of the car to help the man, who was bleeding profusely but lay there quietly.

"It was incredible to see a man with an amputated food who didn't say anything or scream," said Shlomo. He even answered our questions about how he felt. We did all we could to keep him awake so he wouldn't lose consciousness before the ambulance arrived."

The pediatric nurse said the event was very traumatic for her, even though she was a medic in the IDF and knew what to do. After seeing the man's condition, she shouted for an elastic band, but no one had any, so he used her sweater to try to stop the bleeding.

The Magen David Adom ambulance evacuated the man to Kaplan for continued treatment, and he was admitted in stable condition. "I am proud of my hospital," said Shlomo, "and I knew he would get the best care to save his life. I called the department where he was hospitalize to check on his condition. When I heard that he was okay and that his relatives [had seen] him, I calmed down."

The three nurses will receive special recognition for their efforts from the hospital management for working quickly and properly to save a man's life.

8 killed in road accidents within 48 hours, 2 killed near Rehovot

No less than eight people were killed on Israel's roads within 48 hours.

"A pedestrian was hit by a truck, this time on Road 40, not far from Rehovot. According to testimonies collected by the police, the young man was intoxicated and may have been lying on the road, waiting for a car to pass. His girlfriend tried to stop him, but at a certain stage, after she managed to get him to stand up, a truck passed by and hit him. The man was seriously injured and later died of his wounds on site. Police were looking into the possibility that he had planned to take his own life.

On Saturday, nine-year old Nimrod Yeni, who was hit by a car north of the Ein Hakore junction in Rishon Lezion, succumbed to his injuries and died at the Tel Aviv Sourasky Medical Center. According to police reports, Yeni’s father stopped by the side of the road in order to buy vegetables from a local vendor.

Nimrod asked to join his father, and was allowed to do so after making sure the road was clear. The child later ventured off on his own, unbeknownst to his father, and was hit—and mortally wounded— by a passing vehicle. Yeni is the only child to a single mother, who decided to donate his organs..."

Rehovot man killed in an accident

"A Rehovot man was killed yesterday morning when his van collided with a gate on Moshav Beit Elazary. Police believe the victim, who was about 76, crashed into a gate separating one part of the community from the rest. "We are guessing that the gate was partially open and the driver thought he could get through it," Shfela Traffic Police Superintendent Ya'akov Cohen said. "But when he did, a pipe in the gate went through the windshield and hit him in the head." The victim was pronounced dead at the scene. "
